I met the former Chief Justice of India Sri Venkatachalaiah in a Conference, yesterday.

He is a remarkable person.

He is unassuming, graceful, and pleasant.

He spoke with utmost clarity. The speech was well structured. He didn’t ramble at all. It seemed he read out from a prepared text. But he didn’t.

He felt that if things go the way they are going today, by 2020 our country will be ungovernable. We will see a full fledged anarchy by then, he was worried.

It is easy to say that his pessimism is warranted. Perhaps pessimism is unwarranted. But it is difficult to dismiss his concerns. The biggest of them is people losing trust in the rulers and the structures of governance.
