Sparrows, I find them again
I told you I was thrilled to find Sparrows in Bangalore airport. There’s a reason for my delight. When we came to Isavaasyam, we had dozens of them here. They were everywhere. They built their nests in many places inside the house.

The Aavakaaya Ritual
Every year Avakaaya making is a compulsory ritual at home. Those were days of intense labour by almost everyone at home. Unlike today, hardly any of the ingredients was bought as a finished product from the shops those days. They bought chillies and made them into powder at home. Oil was brought from the regular oil mill nearer home that used a lone buffallo which went round and round to run the mill and extracted oil from the sesame seeds. Able bodied uncles and cousins were there to do the heavy lifting and cutting. Aunts, women in the neighbourhood were there to help with drying, powdering, and cleaning the material.

Write, so that you can write
I am writing this only to see if this helps me break my writer’s block. I have recently written a piece in Telugu for a Newspaper. Since then I haven’t done any writing outside my professional commitments. I wrote a couple of proposals, and a comprehensive report. The report demanded interpretation and analysis of a huge amount of data. It is a bit of a challenge because it has to be put in a format and a language that will be intelligible to government officers and their junior colleagues. I think I have done a pretty decent job.

Hyderabad, Not At Ease
The city of pearls, of palaces, the fort city that was once home to the world famous Koh-i-Noor and nearly two hundred lakes, is still called Hyderabad Deccan by the Indian Railways. This is to distinguish our Hyderabad from another Hyderabad on the planet, Hyderabad Sind. Remembering that Hyderabad sits on the harsh Deccan plateau helps.
